Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by inhaling carbon monoxide gas. It is colourless, odourless, and tasteless, making it particularly dangerous as it can go undetected without an alarm.
Carbon monoxide (CO) can come from various sources around the home, especially those that involve the burning of carbon-based fuels. These include:
- Gas Space Heaters: These heaters can produce CO if they are not properly vented or maintained
- Furnaces and Chimneys: Blocked or dirty chimneys can cause CO to build up inside the home. Regular maintenance is essential to prevent this
- Gas Stoves: Using gas stoves without proper ventilation can lead to CO accumulation. Always use an exhaust fan vented to the outdoors
- Generators and Gasoline-Powered Equipment: Using these indoors or too close to the house can result in dangerous CO levels
- Automobile Exhaust: Running a car in an attached garage, even with the door open, can allow CO to seep into the home
- Wood-Burning Stoves and Fireplaces: These can produce CO if not properly vented or if the chimney is blocked
Too often CO poisoning can be confused with other things such as flu or a hangover, it is consequently hard to detect, If you are consistently experiencing tiredness, headaches, nauseas, dizziness, blurred vision and weakness this can all be signs you are experiencing CO poisoning.
A CO alarm is essential for safety. It will provide peace of mind and also prevent long term health conditions. As part of the Positive Energy Project we are giving away free CO alarms simply click here in order to request one.
