Carbon Monoxide – stay safe at home

Carbon monoxide safety

Carbon monoxide (CO) causes over 60 deaths per year in the UK, and many times more hospitalisations. But only about 10% of UK households have a CO monitor.

  • What is it? A colourless, odourless gas.
  • Symptoms include: Headaches, dizziness, vomiting, fatigue.

What should I do?

  • Install a CO monitor in every room with a carbon fuel source…
  • eg. your kitchen (if you have a gas stove or oven, or that’s where your boiler is)
  • eg. your lounge (if you have a gas fire, a woodburning stove or an open fire)
  • Place the monitor less than 3 metres from the appliance, and at least 15cm from the ceiling
  • Check the monitor’s batteries, and test the device regularly

In case of emergency:

  • Open all doors and windows
  • Move outside
  • Call the Emergency Gas Service: 0800 111 999

Are you a homeowner? It is your responsibility to install and maintain Carbon Monoxide monitors/alarms in your house. We are no longer able to offer these for free.

If you rent your home from the council or a private landlord, it is their responsibility to provide you with CO alarms. If you have worries that your alarms are not up-to-date, contact them directly.
